Do It Yourself Home Building Kits

If you want your own home, but just cannot afford to hire a contractor for a turnkey job, another option to consider is a home building kit.

A home building kit allows you to do much of your own work building your home. Since you are investing labor and time into the home you save money and build equity. This is not an easy task and is called sweat equity.

A home building kit will not include everything you need to complete your home. You will need to have plumbing, electrical and cement work done. If you choose a cement slab for the floor it will need to be in place before you start building your home.

Many home building kits are "dry in" kits. They include all framing materials, siding, windows, exterior doors and roofing. You will be responsible for everything else. The materials from the kit will be pre-cut. This saves time and expense of mis-cut materials. All you do is follow the kit directions, find the pre-cut materials and nail into place.

According to which kit you buy you may be responsible for most of the interior finishing yourself. This may include gypsum wallboard to cover the walls, flooring, cabinets and interior doors.

Look over a list of materials included in the kit before making your final decision. Calculate what it will cost for the complete home. Be sure that all the work that you are going to have to do will save you enough money to be worth the time and sweat. You can find calculators online that will help to count the cost of completing your home. The company selling the kit may also be able to give you an estimate of those costs.

As with any contract be sure to understand terms before signing.

You may find a home kit to be the correct choice for you.
